The light of my village

By: Wak Jamal

Last year's landslide was not the first event that occurred in my village. Since I was born, this disaster has counted dozens of times. But this time of the landslide was the most terrible. The land measuring 3 × 20 square meters collapsed due to the pressure of the load which was influenced by gravity. I, who was asleep, immediately woke up to hear a huge roar, like a meteor shower.

The bed where I was lying shook so badly that it dropped me to the floor. Everyone in my house rushed out to save themselves because they thought there had been a big earthquake. Just when I left the house, the vibration stopped and to my surprise, the land in front of me vanished! Less than 4 meters from the terrace, I was above the abyss! My yard was gone, all that was left was the curry leaves that Mother had planted in the yard. This landslide crept neatly along the 20 meters and eliminated landlords' property for some people. Mango trees, coconuts, cottonwoods and flowers are in ruins. They, the plant families, their roots are not strong enough to hold the soil, instead they only add mass which then participates in this landslide.

Even though I'm not a geologist, that doesn't mean I'm science blind. I know a little about this natural event. The landslide in the same area as me was caused by the work of a sand-sucking machine, which sucked sand every day in my village.
I don't think that's the only cause of this disaster. This disaster is a warning from Allah to the people of my village. He has been angry to see people's behavior that never healed, even more relapsing.

I am grateful, my family survived this event. A modest house is still intact with furniture in it, one that is near, my TV antenna. The antenna which was attached to the bamboo stems fell during the landslide. Luckily the antenna was still attached to the cabal and was still stuck so I stayed stretching it slowly from above to touch the ground.

Another with my next door neighbor, poor them. Half of the house collapsed so that only the kitchen space was left behind. Luckily, my family at that time did not go to work at home. They visited his daughter who was staying at the hospital.

Last year's landslides claimed 15 lives and displaced hundreds of millions of rupiah. This amount of rupiah is not an estimate of the total lost property in the form of land, houses and trees. But all of this is real money, money worth hundreds of millions of rupiah.

I am not surprised by this fact, the cottage to the left of my house is often the headquarters of illicit objects, namely methamphetamine. Right in the early morning, before the landslide occurred. The cottage was visited by several people to make transactions, they were consumers who came from various regions and the dealers themselves. Truly whose name is fate, they die. He sank the creatures and their property. Money, cellphones, jewelry, and motorbikes parked disappeared in the swallow of the earth. The next morning the disaster site was filled with residents. They were not busy coming to help evacuate the bodies, but only looking for treasure buried among the corpses. They multiplied using a hoe, some even almost hit the corpse's hand.

My village is not far from the word disaster, last January lightning struck the village chief's office building until it was charred. 2 people died because they were trapped in a fire. These two people are village secretaries and village typists. Malang was right that these two people were found like toast.

I thought, this incident must have been a warning as well as unmasking corruption in my village. Many aid funds distributed by the government stop on their distended stomachs. I remember when, a bag of rice was loaded into a pick-up from the village chief. I asked, why wasn't it distributed to the villagers. He openly answered that he wanted to sell it to the market.

Strangely, the villagers who were betrayed by the village government did not care at all. Perhaps they have become accustomed to such things. The villagers are busy with their own business. They cannot get any help but they are still full. They will not worry, the cannabis yard has become the main economic power. Some are busy opening shamanistic practices.
I was left with my family and relatives who are still believers. The numbers can be counted using fingers. Comparison with the entire village population is one in nine hundred and ninety nine.

My village only has one quiet and that quiet. If Friday prayers, forced to mosque next village.
How unlucky my village is. Even the madrasa where I recite the afternoon had become a place to use illicit goods. I often meet, teenagers gather by the river, they get drunk while listening to DJ music. If one of them is jazzed, the jazzed one is left alone.
Just know! Drunk is a crazy brother. They are no different, stupid things often happen as a result.

Once when I was in high school. I was intercepted by a scary friend. This local thug carries a bad feeling. He gritted, snatched and wanted to stab me.
"You don't know who I am ha ?, Here, your motorcycle!" the thug snapped.
"Gosh, sir, this is the only one I have," I replied softly.
"If you want to make money, do not rob this kind, work beautifully, support your children and wife" I continued.
I was so innocent before. Until giving advice to a thug who was clearly locked in his heart, I didn't know that this thug was out of his mind, had been affected by drugs.

"Don't talk too much, you want to eat a knife!", The thug pulled out his pocketknife. I was shocked and worried.
"Gosh bang" I cried a lot.

All I have in mind is my family. I remember what my father said, if we are in an urgent situation, read the verse three times. I sweat reading the verse of the chair in my heart. The knife is getting closer. Really! It is indeed God's power. The thug fell and fainted do not know why. I immediately ran away with my motorbike. Not long afterwards heard the news of a man died with a foamy mouth. After hearing the news, I just found out because he suddenly fainted. In a heart attack caused by an overdose of methamphetamine. So, to treat it he must consume more methamphetamine. Even to the dark eyes want to kill people.

The majority of villagers emphasize the economy of plantations. Most residents handle chili, tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins and other vegetables. Which is then harvested if the harvest mass enters. But that was before the famous drug in my village. Now, residents are more willing to grow cannabis and tobacco.

In my village, very few have never tasted tobacco. They usually wrap it in paper like cigarettes or brew it with tea and even more unique ones who mix it with sponge cake. As for the processing of the most unique marijuana is mixing it with clear vegetables. Really horrific culinary in my village.

Many teens my age do not continue their education. Some of them graduated from elementary school and went straight to work. Those who graduated from high school can be counted using fingers, including me in it. The number of young marriages increases throughout the year, so there is no easy attitude for adults to form a household. In fact, I've heard when a baby whines for milk, her mother is instead playing with marbles.

My village is really messy, many people don't have good ethics. Various criminal acts such as: theft, robbery, fighting, drinking, gambling and drugs spread throughout the whole village. I often meet people who are reckless but stupid in my environment, it can not be separated because of the influence of drugs.

They, the villagers have been indifferent to the sharing of disasters that occur. Those who are still alive continue to carry out their activities. And he let go of the dead. There is no one who can bathe and pray the bodies in my village. If someone dies, the body is sent out of the village to be taken care of properly.
Many people tell me, if anyone dreams of a wanderer asking to untie his shroud. I got goosebumps when I heard the news.
As a minority, I try not to be affected by all the bad things in my environment.

My condition so far is very good. I rely on my own lawful income. I work as a minimarket employee in the city. Even though the salary is not much, it is enough to fulfill my daily needs. I am always grateful for the blessings and sustenance given by God Almighty.
My mother always advised me to remain a pious child and always make my parents happy. My father threatened to expel me if he could see me playing with the village teenagers

My family is like a small light in the dark. I illuminated the darkness with the light I had. with the ability that I have, I always try to guide the children in my village. Hoping to instill goodness from an early age. I teach them to pray, recite, and count every evening after sunset. I never wanted to care about the adults in my village. Because their hearts are dead or petrified. I often advise them but they only think that my talk is nonsense that has no meaning to them.

I thought of wanting to collect as much money and build a house in another area, right I invited my family to move in and settle there. And when I returned to this village, the people had repented and had abandoned immoral acts. I hope that the story of the Prophet Yunus happens again in this day and age, I hope it will happen in my village.

God answered my hope, but with another method. God has opened the doors of the hearts of the parents in the village. They flocked to deliver their children to recite the Qur'an with me. I accept it gladly. They parents want foolishness to be up to themselves. They perceive the behavior of their teenagers as outrageous. Due to negligence of people who do not put their children into education.

Madrasas in my village were rebuilt, the villagers gradually improved. They were happy to hear the blessings of the poetry that was sung by my students. Their funny, funny voices have struck the hearts of anyone who hears them. Many residents are melted and repent nasuha. Surau is increasingly crowded. Now it is not only children who learn the Koran, but also residents of various ages. Last Monday there was a teenager asking for treatment for drug addiction, I read the verses of the Shifa 'and he felt the Divine properties. This teenager has gradually become healthier and is now often mu'azin in the mosque.

I thank God, for giving light to life. The light has changed my village that was originally heretical. I learned a lesson in my life, Namely:

"The smallest amount of light must still shine, even though the darkness that envelops it is as thick as the universe"
