- Mel Gibson was born on January 3, 1956 in Peekskill, New York, USA from Hutton Gibson and Anne Patricia. He is the sixth child of the couple and has 10 other siblings.
- Hutton is a train racer. In 1964 he had a major accident and lost his job. New York Central Railroad compensated him with US $ 145,000. He also won $ 21,000 in the 'Jeopardy' game show.
- Mel was 12 years old during the Vietnam War. Fearing that their son would be recruited in the war, the family moved to West Pymble, Sydney, Australia.
