John Joseph Travolta is an American actor and singer. He made his debut in the cast of Broadway Grease, as well as the musical hit Over Here! He became a star with his role as Vinnie Barbarino in the hit TV series, Welcome Back Kotter, and the critically acclaimed TV film, The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. International fame came with two consecutive box-office hits, Saturday Night Fever and Grease. He made a career back when he starred in the crime of destroying Quentin Tarantino, Pulp Fiction. He was nominated for his second Academy Award and later won the Golden Globe for his performance in the film which received critical acclaim, Get Shorty. Other famous films include Primary Colors and The General's Daughter. He returned to his musical roots with the adaptation of the Broadway movie Hairspray, playing as Edna Turnblad. With the help of wigs, makeup, costumes, and fat suits, he convincingly transforms himself into a big woman to play the role.

  • Travolta was born on February 18, 1954 in Englewood, New Jersey, where his father, Salvatore is an American semi-professional soccer player who has a tire repair shop while his mother, Helen Cecilia is an actress and singer.

  • The youngest of six siblings, his siblings are Joey, Ellen, Ann, Margaret, and Sam. He attended Dwight Morrow High School, but dropped out of school as a junior at the age of 17 in 1971.
